Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Review | CheatCC

Added: 19.03.2014 11:15 | 4 views | 0 comments

CCC Says: "Everything these days is getting a dark and gritty reboot, from Spider-Man to the Bionic Commando. However, Ninja Gaiden has avoided the reboot train for quite some time. Its already a super hard game about a lone ninja fighting against hordes of demons, robots and corrupt government officials. Its ultra-violent, super grim, and incredibly serious. It already feels like a dark and gritty reboot. So how do you grittify Ninja Gaiden? The answer: Profanity."

So much for that blood-boner, then, not that you'd be able to keep it up during the game's first major showdown, which drops to single-digit frame rates in the heat of battle. Still, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z keeps pumping out the blood, hoping to turn you on with its gory combat and vulgar attitude. Every so often, 8-year-old me--the part of me that thinks that asking everyone what word starts with "f" and ends in "u-c-k" is funny--got a kick out of Yaiba's exploits. Most of the time, however, I could only wish that Ninja Gaiden Z's striking art style had been applied to a better canvas.

A waste of time.

Taking its cue from the Grindhouse craze that stopped being relevant or interesting shortly before it had even started, Ninja Gaiden Z jettisons Ryu Hayabusa as the lead in favour of pitting the eponymous Yaiba against hordes of undead.

Sadly, the refined combat the series is known for has been abandoned along with any attempt at interesting art direction. Instead of a timing-based countering system, here you're mostly cutting through waves of shambling undead using identical, repetitive combos which hit with an impact that feels like you're waving a flag rather than a sword.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z review - games

With a propensity for violence that would make Tarantino blush, a penchant for outrageous spectacle over systemic depth and an affinity for crass humour mixed with innocent slapstick, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is almost a parody of itself, displaying a near postmodern self-awareness of the low brow tendencies on which its appeal is predicated
